Kalimpong is the 21st District of West Bengal which came into being on the 14th February 2017, with three Police Stations, namely Kalimpong, Jaldhaka and Gorubathan.
On that day, the hon'ble Chief Minister of West Bengal, Miss Mamata Banerjee, declared that Kalimpong is the 21st district of the state while addressing the locals at the "Lepcha Board Foundation Day Program" in Kalimpong Mela ground on 14th February, 2017.
Kalimpong town is the headquarters of the Kalimpong district. Kalimpong town is a hill station. It is also known for its Educational Institutions, many of which were established during the British colonial period. It used to be the gateway in the trade between Tibet and India before China's annexation of Tibet.
Kalimpong district is mainly a tourist destination owing to its temperate climate, magnificient Himalayan beauty and proximity to popular tourist spots in this region. Horticulture is important to Kalimpong. Kalimpong is specially known for various types of orchids and succulent plants.
Cardamom, Epicake, Cinchona, Orange, Ginger, broom Stick are the main cultivation of this district. The majority of the population today in Kalimpong district are the Gorkhas, Lepchas and Bhutias etc. NH10 connecting to Sikkim State and Siliguri falls under this district from Swetijhora to Rangpo. Neora Valley National Park is situated in this district.
This district consisits of the Kalimpong Municipality and three Community Development Blocks : 1) Kalimpong -1, 2) Kalimpong -2, 3) Gorubathan and eight Police Stations : 1) Kalimpong P.S, 2) Gorubathan P.S. 3) Jaldhaka P.S. 4) Kalimpong Women P.S 5) Cyber Crime P.S 6) Reang P.S 7) Pedong PS and 8)Lava PS.
